Led by Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi, Inter Miami finished top of both the MLS Eastern Conference and overall MLS table in a season when they lost just four times in 34 league matches.
Miami also achieved the highest regular-season points total (74) in the history of the MLS.
And they clinched that total by thumping New England 6-2 at Chase Stadium helped in no small way by Messi netting four of their goals.
Part-owner David Beckham was part of those celebrations as he thanked the Herons fans and looked forward to his team taking part in the MLS Cup playoffs.
Although Messi often, rightly, grabbed the headlines he enjoyed the support of Spain’s Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets and the goals of fellow South American Luis Suarez.
Argentine coach Gerardo Martino’s essentially attacking style (they were also the league top scorers) and obvious connection with fellow-countryman Messi clearly contributed to the success of the team from Florida.
So, in four years Inter have gone from often being in the lower reaches of the MLS, including in overall 27th last year, to winning the Shield.
But, the US system being what it is, they will still want to combine that triumph with lifting the MLS Cup which culminates when the Conference finals playoff winners meet in December.
And as an added bonus it was later confirmed that Miami will participate in the US-staged FIFA Club World Cup, no doubt boosting the ticket sales for that competition.
